Getting found

If Google can’t find you, neither can your customers.

Most people don’t go looking for a tradesperson — they type “plumber near me” and ring one of the first three that show up on the map. If you’re not on that map, you’re not in the running, and you never even know the job existed.

A dart in the bullseye of a target — being found is hitting the spot customers are searching.

That last bit is the part that stings. A lost job at least tells you something — you quoted, they went elsewhere, you learn. The jobs you lose on Google are silent. The phone simply doesn’t ring, and you put a quiet week down to the weather.

Here is what is actually happening. Someone in Leigh has a leak under the sink. They don’t open a directory and they don’t ask a mate — they pick up their phone and thumb in “emergency plumber near me”. Google shows them a little map with three businesses pinned on it, a star rating under each, and a Call button. Nine times out of ten they ring one of those three without scrolling an inch further. That box is called the local pack, and getting into it is the whole game.

Why it’s not about your website

Most trades think being findable means building a website. It helps — we’ll come to it — but it is not the thing that puts you in that map box. The map is powered by a Google Business Profile: the free listing with your name, your area, your hours, your number and your reviews. Plenty of firms with no website at all sit at the top of the pack because their profile is complete and their rivals’ are half-empty.

And half-empty is the norm. Most profiles are either unclaimed — Google made a stub from an old listing and nobody ever took it over — or claimed years ago and never touched. Wrong hours. An old mobile. No trades listed. No photos. Every one of those gaps is a reason for Google to rank the more complete firm above you, and a reason for the customer to ring them instead.

The single biggest lever most small firms are leaving untouched is free, and it takes an afternoon.

The afternoon that fixes it

You don’t need us for this, and you don’t need to spend a penny. Sit down with a cup of tea and do these, in order:

That’s it. No agency, no monthly fee, no jargon. It is the cheapest hour’s work you will ever do for the size of what it returns — and yet it is the one most firms never get round to, because there is always a job on and the profile can wait until Sunday that never comes.
